1. ENGLSIH LANGUAGE TRAINING SERVICES
The English Language Training Services is a self-financing department, and is part of the Department of Modern Languages. It was set up to provide English support classes for overseas students at the University. It has since expanded, however, and now runs a wide variety of EFL, EAP and ESP courses (as well as teacher training courses, BA modules and supervising research into Applied Linguistics). The process of all course design is approached from a holistic perspective and all the needs of the student are taken into account.
The primary concern of the ELTS is the overall welfare and development of the student and there is a policy to provide as much pastoral support as possible for students. An ethos of strong, supportive person contact runs through all the activities of the Centre.

3. WHAT IS GENERAL INTENSIVE SUMMER SCHOOL
General Intensive Summer classes only run from July to August between 09.30 and 15.00. Classes are a combination of General English skills; speaking, listening, reading and writing.
The General Intensive Summer courses are designed for students who want
to improve their General English language skills. The students are all adults and come from a very wide variety of social, cultural, religious and learning backgrounds. Many are experiencing life in an English-speaking environment for the first time.
Classes usually have up to fifteen students. Sometimes the number may drop
below this, but it rarely rises above it.
below this, but it rarely rises above it.
The 6 week course includes 3 full-day excursions (for example to Cardiff , Bath or Tenby) and 3 half-day visits to the Gower Peninsula .

6. COURSE SYLLABUS
The Summer Course Classes run Monday to Thursday 09.30-15.00 & Friday 09.30-12.00. The syllabus for the first 2 classes is based around the textbook Clockwise (Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate & Advanced). Clockwise is an intensive, multi-level course in general English for adults who want to build competence in English quickly and effectively for social interaction and functional purposes.
The syllabus reflects the priorities of the short course learner. The emphasis is on developing fluency and building confidence in speaking and understanding. It refreshes key grammar areas and extends and builds a wider usable vocabulary. Over the period of the course you may think that a certain grammar or language point has been repeated, this is likely to be correct as many language points have more than one function in English i.e. they may do more than one thing e.g. Present Simple Tense refers to the present in Habits or States " He lives in Swansea." but also the future for timetabled events " The bus leaves at two".
Students will be given a text reference book when they are enrolled on the course. Additional supplementary material taken from a wide variety of sources will also be given out during the course by the teachers. The course will cover subjects such as Home, Health, Travel, The Media, The Environment etc.
The third class of the day focuses on a particular skill (writing, reading or listening) and also includes a class on Life in Britain . The final class of the day is communication skills.
7. TESTING
All General Intensive Summer students are given a placement test on arrival. The test is a multiple choice test and is used purely for finding each student’s level so they can go into the correct level class.
On completion of the course, students are presented with a certificate and also asked to fill in a feedback form, which allows them to comment on teaching, classes and accommodation - in general, any aspect of their time at ELTS.
8. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
As a student studying on the General Intensive Summer course you are expected to:
- Arrive at class on time e.g. the first class of the day starts at 09.30 and students should arrive by 09.30 at the latest. Arriving late cause disruption in the class and this is unfair to your classmates.
- Attend class regularly, if possible, we would like our students to inform us of any absence as early as possible, if you are unwell, or just unable to come to class for whatever reason please phone us to let us know. Please call Viv Lethbridge at ELTS. The number is 01792 295391
- Attempt to complete any set homework.
- Use English as your language of communication when in class and in the Centre.
- Tell us of any problem you feel you have. In the first instance you should speak to your class teacher, if it is a problem you do not wish to speak to your teacher about then you should see the Course Co-ordinator who will be able to help / advise you.
9. FIRE DRILL
When the fire bell rings continuously, the teacher must stop the class and tell all the students to accompany him/her to the assembly area. Take nothing with you. Do not stop to collect your belongings. Wait until a Safety Officer has given you permission before re-entering the building. Treat each fire alarm as if it were the real thing, even if you know it is a drill.
If you discover a fire, raise the alarm by breaking the glass of the nearest fire alarm call point. Dial 333 on the internal phone, and give the location of the fire - this is quicker than dialling 999, and the fire brigade are automatically informed. Do NOT take any risks. Close the doors and windows as you go.
For the main building the assembly point is the main car park in front of The Grove Building.
The Safety Adviser in ELTS is Kevin Child.
10. THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
ELTS' General Intensive Summer students can use the main university library on the main campus on a non-borrowing basis. Students staying for more than one month, and who have a genuine need to borrow books, can apply for a borrowing card on production of a letter from ELTS supporting their application. Before students leave, they are required to provide proof that they have returned all their library books, and that they have no outstanding fines, by asking a member of library staff to complete the appropriate section of the Financial Clearance form.
11. ASSESSMENT AND FEEDBACK PROCEDURES
ELTS assesses all General Intensive Summer students on the first day of their course using an in-house placement test. Before they leave, all students are given a feedback form. All information gained from feedback forms is incorporated into subsequent course planning sessions.
